2023-05-25

The students attenting the Student Conference have elected a new BUP Student Representative. There were four candidates and after the closed voting the participating students elected Niumi Dissanayake from Riga Technical University in Latvia as the new Student Representative.

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) has two student representatives on the International Board. The representatives are elected by democratic vote in the Student Parliament, which is held during the Student Conference. This years conference was held in Kaunas 9-12 May. Niumi joins Tereza Homolova that has one year left on her mandate as a BUP Student Representative.

Here is a presentation as well as Niumis thoughts about the role as a BUP Student Representative:

"My name is Niumi Dissanayake and I am from Sri Lanka. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Riga Technical University in Latvia.

I am a passionate, self-assured and driven individual with a strong dedication to academic excellence and personal growth. I have always been captivated by the intersection of knowledge and its practical application. Through my studies I am developing deep knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) based subject areas.

I am an avid learner and constantly seek opportunities to expand my knowledge beyond the classroom. I actively engage in extracurricular activities and participate in many social activities and clubs as Leo Club, AISEC (Association internationale des étudiants en sciences économiques et commerciales) and now in the BUP. This is how I apply my academic knowledge in real-world scenarios. These experiences have not only broadened my horizons but also equipped me with critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

In addition, I am a firm believer in the power of humanity, kindness, love, and peace. These values are deeply ingrained in my character and serve as guiding principles in both my personal and academic life. I strongly believe that a world built on compassion, understanding, and equality can create lasting positive change. It is the pursuit of these ideals that ignites my passion and keeps me motivated to serve the world.

My dreams extend beyond personal achievements; they encompass a vision of a society where every individual is treated with respect and has equal opportunities to thrive. I am dedicated to contributing my skills and knowledge to initiatives that promote inclusivity, social justice, and the well-being of others. Whether it's through engaging in community outreach programs, organizing awareness campaigns, or fostering dialogue on pressing global issues, I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me."

Niumi will attend her first board meeting in the beginning of the autumn. During the coming months Niumi and Tereza will they will develop, plan and attend BUP events as well as work with the BUP Student Ambassadors.
