New Centre Director Czech Republic

2022-11-23

We welcome Ivana Adamiková, M.Sc, Director of the Center for international cooperation at University of Ostrava as our new Centre Director in Czech Republic. Ivana has shared with us some thoughts about her new position as well as her past experiences that can benefit her work.

As the Centre Director of the Czech National Centre for The Baltic University Programme, a priority for me will be to develop a network of participating Czech universities that will actively contribute to the sustainable development and democracy in the Baltic Sea Region.

The University of Ostrava (UO) joined the BUP in the beginning of 2018 and so far we have participated mainly in the SAIL-events (Sustainability Applied in International Learning) and student conferences. However, we will try to build on the dedicated work of the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava that served as a national center for the past 15 years.

As a director of the center for international cooperation, I will try to strengthen cooperation between international offices within BUP, as they play an important role in supporting academics, researchers and students. I believe that such a network within BUP will strengthen the awareness of students and lecturers about the Baltic region and the critical need for international cooperation.

Before joining the University of Ostrava, I worked for 10 years at the Ministry of the Environment and was responsible for the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements at all levels. During the period of 2009 - 2011, I worked at the United Nations in Bonn as Program Officer for Central and Eastern Europe and contributed to the establishment of the Regional Reference Center on Drought and Desertification for Central and Eastern Europe based at Mendel University in Brno. The sustainable development agenda has always been close to me. At the university, we have therefore prepared a unique program for students and academics, called the OU Aid, that is intended for all those who want to work as volunteers in order to help achieve the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

I wish for the University of Ostrava to become an active member of the BUP, promoting openness, internationalization, mobility and cooperation contributing the sustainable development, environmental protection and democracy in the Baltic Sea Region.
