Invitation for Expressions of Interest to Host the 3rd World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research, April 2021

The "World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research" series started in 2017, based on the perceived need to explore and present concrete case studies which illustrate how Sustainability Science and Research can help to achieve the many goals listed in the document "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".

The first Symposium was held in Manchester, UK in April 2017, and led to the “Handbook of Sustainability Science and Research", with 61 chapters and 981 pages, a highly cited publication.

The "2nd World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research” was held in Curitiba, Brazil in April 2019  and led to the book "Universities and Sustainable Communities: Meeting the Goals of the Agenda 2030", which has just been published  (52 chapters, 838 pages).

Both publications are part of the "World Sustainability Series", a highly influential peer-reviewed book series on sustainable development issues, quoted across the literature. Pubications at the series have over many years been officially acknowledged as quality scientific outputs, and have successfully counted for promotion and tenure purposes. Delegates attending the World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research Series come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. They are:

  1. representatives of government organisations, government offices and local authorities;
  2. researchers working at universities, colleges and research centres;
  3. teaching staff;
  4. representatives from enterprises;
  5. representatives from NGOs and grassroots organisations
  6. project officers and consultants;
  7. other people interested in the field.

We are now asking for expressions of interest from higher education institutions, which may be interested to host the "3rd World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research", which is expected to be held in April 2021. We would expect around 100 selected delegates to attend this highly specialised event. As an output of the Symposium, a set of special issues of the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education will be produced, to which the hosts may act as co-editors.

Expressions of interest, initially consisting of a short outline of the possible host organisation, and information on its engagement on matters related to sustainable development, should be sent to: IUSDRP by 10th March 2020. Further details will be discussed with the potential hosts.
