BUP Student Conference 2023
The Baltic University Programme’s Coordinating Secretariat at Uppsala University and Kaunas University of Technology, proudly present the BUP Student Conference 2023. This year, we are focusing on the topic Sustainable production and consumption: A circular economy perspective.
The conference is free of charge and applications are open for students studying at bachelor and master level at The Baltic University Programme’s participating universities. In total 80 students from BUP participating universities will be selected to take part.
The first full day of the conference is held together with the International Young Researchers Conference hosted by Kaunas University of Technology. This means that the BUP Student Conference will have a focus on the development of young researchers’ competences in connection to sustainable industrial development, sustainable production and sustainable consumption.

Topic and program
The main topic is Circular Economy. All accepted applicants are welcome to apply to give a presentation during the conference within any of the following topics:
- Advanced mechanical technologies
- Industrial Design and Engineering
- Material Science and Engineering
- Production Technologies and Engineering
- Sustainable Consumption and Business Management.
- Sustainable Energy Systems
- Sustainable Food Systems and Agriculture
- Sustainable Urban and Rural Development
- Transport Engineering and Sustainable Mobility
The student conference will offer a opportunity to learn about the issues addressed by other students works and their results, discuss and assess the international importance of scientific achievements for the industry and society.
All accepted students will have to attend a pre-conference training taking place online on 11 April 2023, focusing on introducing the main theme Circular Economy and the possibilities to present at the conference.

Presentations and publication
All accepted students will get the opportunity to submit articles for presenting papers or posters during the part of the conference that is held together with the International Young Researchers Conference.
The submitted papers are subject to review and decision on their publication by the editorial board of the publication, in view of the assessments and recommendations provided by the reviewers. Papers in English will be published online in the conference Book of Abstracts called Industrial Engineering 2023 – Circular Economy: production and consumption.
All students admitted will have to take part in a pre-conference training day where the main focus is to introduce the main subject and discuss how to connect your own studies to Circular Economy and what you need to think about when submitting for presentations at a conference. After the notification of acceptances of articles there will be a second, mandatory only for those that want to present, pre-conference training day were all students are welcome. The focus for this pre-conference training is how to create a well-structured presentation and on how to give a research presentation.
Timeline for research presentations at the conference:
- 11 april 2023, mandatory pre-conference training day
- 13 April 2023, last day for submissions of articles
- 28 April 2023, participants get a notification of acceptance of article
- 2 May 2023, optional pre-conference training day

Students' Parliament 2023
Each year, students taking part in the BUP student conference have the chance to make their voices heard and select their new BUP student representative to BUP's international board.
Students accepted to the student conference, will automatically become members of the Students' Parliament. Allowing them to vote, suggest proposal and run as a candidate as the BUP Student Representative to the BUP's international board. The Students' Parliament is held on 11 May in the afternoon.
Practical information
Conference cost and location
The conference will take place at Kaunas University of Technology in Kaunas, Lithuania. The conference does not have any participant fees.
Each student has to fund their travels to and from Kaunas by themselves.
Accomodation and food
Accepted students will be accommodated in Kaunas and all meals will be provided from the evening of 9 May to lunchtime on the 12 May.
Selection of students
After the application deadline on 2 April 2023, The Baltic University Programme’s Coordinating Secretariat and the BUP National Centres will be selecting the students based upon their motivation, field of study and background. Selected students will be offered a place, while the remaining students will automatically be put on a waiting list. At the latest on 6 April 2023 the students that have been selected will be contacted.
