Restoration Ecology - Healing Aquatic Environments

Introduction

Recently much effort has been directed towards restoration of various marine and fresh water environments. This refers to coasts, lakes, rivers and wetlands. In general the aim has been to increase and support biodiversity by physical restorations (drainage reversals), chemical restorations (removal of polluted sediments and other sources of contaminants) and reintroduction of lost species. The totality of the actions constitute a new movements towards healing of damaged ecosystems to enrich our environment and create new areas for its own sake as well as for enjoyment of man and sometimes further functions, such as traps of nutrients.

The seminar will review existing experiences of the conditions for successful restorations of species and environments and attempt to formulate some general conclusions.

Hel Marine Station

Hel Marine Station on the Baltic Sea coast near Gdansk, Poland, has a unique experience of work with introducing lost species in the southern Baltic Sea. This includes the reintroduction of the grey seal and work with the Baltic sturgeon as well as reintroducing the macrophyte bladder wrack, Fucus vesicolosus, a key component in coastal ecological system. Much of this work has been conducted in international cooperation. Especially Swedish partners have been active and include e.g. Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University, WWF/Sweden and also the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant.

The workshop/seminar: "Healing Aquatic Environments"

The seminar will combine the experiences from previous and ongoing activities in research, practical work and education on restoration of aquatic environments. It will be combination of a research workshop and a student seminar. The double purpose is to develop the research area and to stimulate students interest to choose a career in the field.

The workshop will involve researchers from several countries and span over four days.

The students seminar will span 2 weeks and include a 3 days preparative educational component. After the workshop the students will continue with field studies in the Gdansk Bay area.

Organization

The seminar is  organized in cooperation with Hel Marine Station, University of Gdansk and Lublin University of Agriculture and Baltic University Programme.

Location

The seminar will be held between the 11 - 22 August, 2003 at the Hel Marine Station at the Hel Peninsula, northern Poland.
