Story Line

This is the Photo Story Line task conducted on board the Chopin.

1. Ordinary day

1. It was a simple day, not much different from any other one. Pretty rough but bright and hopeful. Full of navy-royal-cyan blue with a slight touch of turquoise, aquamarine, and azure. However, now there is no matter what is around. It’s time for dinner.

2. Dinner

2. This time is especially cool because of our crosscultural talks. We discuss cuisine, traditions of our countries and learn some foreign words. Unfortunately, it’s important to eat quickly and run to the look-outs or gang-watches, oh no-o-o-o! Chopin is entering the harbour tomorrow!!!

3. The food

3. Before that, one more thing needs to be complained about – we don’t get much fresh fruits and vegetables here. So one of the greatest moments of this lovely day was simple – sweet salad at lunch. Cook is amazing!

4. Desert

4. Despite that, some things may let you forget about food, no matter how hungry you are. Being source of joy and inspiration for humans, this fascinating mix of hues and colours is just food for other species, the food that humans would rarely enjoy. And still the passion of humans to recreate this beauty in food and mood create food for though and hold mystery.

5. Seasickness

5. Yet, if there is too much beauty around, sometimes it can make You sick and You must find other aim.

6. Mystery

6. Common moods, thoughts and tireness bring our hearts together through music, building closer communication despite coldness, darkness, and exhaustion.

7. The ship

7. And only the ships on the sunset were our compains and only stars and lighthouses show us the way.

8. Pasta

8. But we had no time to feel lonely as there were many pieces of pasta feeling seasick.

9. sleepy

9. After all, trying to get some sleep we gave up and went to make some coffee. Nobody was happy during that day on the ship.

10. Coffee

10. The night was cold, but enough that we grabbed our coffee and went to the aftdeck. We were laying on the deck, enjoying cigarette and music. Music always helped us calm down after weary day.

11. Morning

11. We felt better the next morning but we didn’t know yet that this day would bring the greatest adventure of our lifes. No one could be blamed – the whole crew was confused about this strange thing that suddenly appeared. No one knew about the things dark forces... no one, really?!

12. Dark forces

12. There seemed to be a person who knew. His eyes were giving him away. The steering wheele of destiny in his hands promised adventures and seemed to be pushed by that forces. Dark forces. However, no-one paid attention. The strange thing that appeared caught everyone except for him, by surprise.

13. More seasickness

13. The sight of it, terrified the students, and teachers alike. After the initial shock, many felt ill and had to lie down on the aftdeck. Revulsion and fear had caused the feeling of sickness in their stomachs.

14. The Buka

14. The Buka was approaching. Waves froze and became completely white. Wind calmed down and the ship got stuck in the middle of iceberg field. The creature suddenly stopped saying „That is enough!“

Buka and the crew

15. „...Now I will kill the whole crew – student by student, officer by officer, cook by...ugh...mechanic. Ha-ha-ha-ha! All sailors were running, shouting, elbowing their way, praying. There were only 2 people able to think logically and eager to fight against Buka – Pawel and Radek. But the problem of the ship. Instead of trying to defeat the creature they started a battle against each other. After 10 minutes they were lying on deck in blood and obviously unable to defend F. Chopin. And Buka was waiting patiently on the ice surrounding the ship. There was no hope for the crew anymore. - Prospumooditüdruk.

16. The unexpected

16. However, an unexpected and super-storm came while Buka was definitely sure that he was the final winner. Situation changed! Buka need all the crews to help him brase, set the sail and navigate out of this deadly stormy weather. Finally, Buka realized he could not own F. Chopin without the crew who was able to save him at certain time...

17. The last student.

17. At the end we have all packed our backs. Everybody is sad about the end of our beautiful sailing tour. Now everybody goes back home. In the end all survived seasickness. Back home we have to tell many old sailors stories and have experiences for our whole live. And we SAIL in our minds for the rest of our lives and see us anywhere again.

Fine

SAIL 2012

Photo: Elena MironovaSustainability Applied in International Learning 2012 is finished. We hope you have enjoyed this project and that the three weeks of SAIL became the adventure of a lifetime for both our students and teachers. Once again the SAIL course was organized on board the STS Fryderyk Chopin. This time for 32 students from 11 of the countries in the Baltic University Programme network.

As organizers we did our best to make SAIL not only a great social event and sailing adventure but also to an interesting educational and scientific experience. We are happy to announce that 28 students passed the final exam and are granted 7.5 ECTS points from Uppsala University. Congratulations!!!!

Lars EmmelinIt was great to cooperate with the SAIL teachers. Special thanks to Prof. Lars Emmelin, for being such an excellent host and giving us the possibility to meet representatives of Karlshamn Municipality and Blekinge Institute of Technology.

This year Tomasz Rozwadowski, the Scientific Captain of SAIL course, unexpectedly, could not stay on board with us. Tomek, we were missing you during the course. Hope, that next year will be more lucky and convenient for our SAILing team!

In preparation for the SAIL course all students and teachers were asked to prepare a “Poster of me”. This poster was then used in a "ice breaking" session and during the team-building process.

The students task Start-up’s CONTEST was the first challenge of the course. This year the SAIL students worked on a specific project based on real problems in their own surroundings i.e. place of living, the site of university, or the region. The problems were related to any discipline, any aspect of everyday life or quality of life as a problem in itself. It was important that the raised issues should point out specific problems to which potential solutions could be written in the form of a business plan or actions to address it. We were expecting innovative thinking, and seeking unconventional attitudes based on the latest achievements of science and technology.

The students were expected to gather knowledge, to become “experts” and be prepared to work on the project with the other participants. The interesting and most “promising” ideas were subjected to a teamwork during course on board. We worked on this material throughout all the course in different groups, trying to find the big issues with greatest potential for changing and improving our environment!

Lennart Lennuk, former SAIL student, now one of the SAIL teachers supervised the amazing Photo-story conducted by students.

The task was not easy. Every student snapped a photo and wrote a fragment from a story. Then, another student read the story and carried it forward with taking a photo and writing another fragment of the story. It was really interesting to observe how the verbal and visual mind of different people interacted and changed. The students did not see the other’s photos, only the text. Furthermore, the students could only take one photo thus to choose the right moment was very crucial. This is also sustainability, not to take meaningless photos as we do so often these days with our digital cameras. Data is also a resource. Indeed, it was a really fun and interesting experiment =)

Dear SAILors, Take care!
and see you someday at the Chopin aft deck!

We are looking forward SAIL 2013!
