The European Commission is launching public consultations on three planned programmes, due to replace three existing programmes from the beginning of 2014:

  • Education and Training Programme - consultation to replace current "Lifelong Learning Programme"
  • Youth Programme- consultation to replace current "Youth in Action Programme"
  • International Higher Education Programme - consultation to replace current "Erasmus Mundus Programme".

Anyone can take part in the consultations: individuals, associations, organisations and stakeholders - simply by visiting the:  and clicking on the relative links. The consultations will be open until 30 November 2010.

Results of the consultations will be published on the Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) website. The results reports will give a consolidated and anonymous analysis of inputs received and indicate how the Commission will take them into account in preparing its proposals for the new programmes. The new programmes should support the Europe 2020 Strategy, which promotes an economy based on knowledge, research and innovation, high levels of education and skills, adaptability and creativity, inclusive labour markets and the active involvement of young people in society. In the consultation questionnaires, your views are kindly asked about the development and design of the programmes and how they can contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth - and especially two of the strategy’s flagship initiatives: "Youth on the move" and "An Agenda for new skills and jobs".
Among others, the public consultation "SCHOOLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY" is open, having as deadline the 15th of December. This public consultation addresses all those interested in the development of school education in Europe. The Commission's consultation document raises a series of issues that are deemed to be crucial for schools in Europe, such as schools and key competences, schools and social inclusion and the role of teachers, among others, on which contributions are sought.

The consultation document and the instructions on how to participate are available at:

A three-day International Event on Greening Education will be held from 27th to 29th of October 2010 in the "green" city of Karlsruhe, Germany. This event will take Academia, Education and Environmental Policy Makers, Senior Members of Academic Institutions, representatives of Government and Non-Governmental Organisations and International Development Agencies, Teachers and School Administrators, Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Professionals and other stakeholders through the need for greening education and then discuss effective initiatives that can be taken to translate "education for sustainability" in to actions.

The event is organized by ADAPT/University of Modena & Reggio Emilia, Italy and Etech Germany in cooperation with Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences", Hamburg.

Further to the knowledge sharing on greening education including topics such as:
'Ecologizing' curriculum (incorporating sustainability)
Greening of courses
Creating low carbon education institutions,
the upcoming event also provides an excellent networking opportunity with academia, sustainable development practitioners and other stakeholders in Europe and beyond.

NanoVirtualium is a web based application designed as a futuristic virtual reality dome, which invites you to enter into the developing world of Nano-technologies. It provides both basic and advanced information on this new emerging technology and it sets out related implications on health and safety (workers), society at large and the environment.

The objective of the website is to help users understand what nanotechnologies are and grasp their scientific underpinnings and potential applications. Furthermore, it aims to present related environmental, health, regulatory and ethical issues: While nanotechnologies indisputably offer an endless extent of possibilities, it is crucial to eventually move towards the resolution of many of the world's current problems and not just increase consumption by putting more products on the market.

The application exists, so far in 6 languages: English, Dutch, French, Greek, Italian and Lithuanian (Danish and German are pending)

Nanovirtualium is an initiative of the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and has been developed within the framework of the NanoCap project (2006-2009) funded by the European Commission’s FP6 Science and Society Programme.
