SAIL 2012 Applications

SAIL 2012The BUP course SAIL is an international course on sustainable development. The 7.5 ECTS credits course is registered at Uppsala University, Sweden for the autumn semester 2012.

Applications to the SAIL 2012 course  is now open at the web site This site is, however, in Swedish only so you may want to download our instructions in English on how to apply doc for the SAIL course. Please see also our new Forum to discuss the application procedure and the SAIL course.

Note: New deadline for applications, last application date is now 23:59 16th April 2012.

Prerequisites for the course are that: 1) you have participated in and passed a BUP course, 2) you are an active student at a BUP member university.

A part of the course will take place on board the sailing ship STS Fryderyk Chopin between 10 - 27 September 2012. The cruise will start in Gdynia, Poland and end in Swinoujscie, Poland.

The SAIL 2012 is a course on sustainable development. The course consists of three parts. Before, during and after the cruise with the sailing ship Chopin. Before the cruise the students have to read some papers on sustainable development selected by the international teachers team. During the cruise lectures will be held on board by the teachers and group works carried out by the students. After the cruise each student has to write a term paper on a subject chosen together with a teacher on board the ship.

Due to a Swedish government decision taken last year all Swedish universities starting from the academic year 2012/2013 will apply new admission rules.

The change means that the SAIL course, like any other Uppsala University course, is open for everybody and that BUP students have to apply for the course at the Uppsala University Registration Office web site. This site will be open for applications for autumn courses between 15th March and 15th April. This site for course applications is, however, in Swedish only! Thus for those who are not Swedish speaking we have prepared a translation and guide to the application process.

The new rules will of course also influence the selection of participants to the SAIL course. We have failed to convince the Uppsala University admission office to make an exception for the SAIL course and give us the possibility to continue with a designated number of places for every BUP country on the course. Consequently we will this year face a totally different application process which unfortunately is not in favour of our member universities.

This makes a major difference for the BUP students since it means that there will be an open competition for places onboard. Neither will we have the right to allocate places for Baltic University Programme students only.

However, to have participated in at least one BUP course or BUP Student Conference is a prerequisite for the course. So for your application be sure to include any BUP course certificate you have. Another prerequisite is that you have to be an active student at a BUP member university. So to your application add some document certifying that your university is a member of the Baltic University Programme, e.g. the BUP interuniversity agreement, the BUP declaration of cooperation or a BUP course agreement.

The BUP centers and our teachers are asked to help students who will apply for SAIL course this year to collect all necessary documents needed for the registration.
