Short background information and introduction to the conference:
The Baltic University Programme courses Peoples of the Baltic and Regional Development and the Baltic Sea Region are undergraduate courses about the Baltic Sea region and its societies under eight headings:

  • A. History, Culture, Languages
  • B. Democracy, Multicultural societies, Peace and Security
  • C. Social conditions, Economic development.

The courses deal mostly with the conditions in the region after the systems change in 1989-91. The aim of the courses is to get to know the Baltic Sea region and to give the students tools for dealing with problems of - sustainable - development in the Baltic Sea region, as well as a general understanding of the problems of regional development.

The development in the societies around the Baltic Sea has been intensive in the past years. In this conference we aim to discuss this development and find ways for updating and renewal of our courses and course materials. Participants will have possibility to share their experience, develop the teaching’s methods, and discuss new projects that will hopefully lead to common applications for funding, and plan for further cooperation and exchange of students groups.

We will organize workshops and invite specialists relevant to topics. The conference leaders are Dr Tomasz Branka, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan (political science), Assoc. Prof. Arnold Bernaciak, University of Economics (economics), Poznan and Professor Lars Rydén Uppsala University (environmental science). A number of topics for which the development the last few years have been particularly interesting for the courses will be treated by invited specialists. They are all based on the general outline of the textbook  “The Baltic Sea Region – Cultures, Politics, Societies” (produced in 2002, with contributions from over 60 authors in 8 countries and Professor W. Maciejewski as editor).
