IntroductionEcology is a field of biology, as such it deals with the connections and interactions between the living species and also their environment. An understanding of ecology is important for those concerned with both man-made and natural changes in the environment. Knowledge on ecology is essential if we want to understand how changes in abiotic factors such as pollution and intrusion will affect living organisms both as individuals and populations. The Baltic Sea
basin was covered by ice during the last ice age. All species living in
the area today has, thus, since then immigrated from somewhere else.
This process is probably ongoing as the Baltic Sea basin is relatively
species poor. This circumstance may make the ecosystems in the area
more sensitive to stresses caused by environmental impact. Authors of this chapter are: Håkan Rydin |
