Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It stretches from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Bering Strait in the east, from the Franz Josef Land in the north to the Caucasus in the south.

In this atlas only the north-western part of the country that lies within or close to the Baltic Sea drainage basin will be covered.

Russia in its present form was established on January 1st 1992, after the cessation of the Soviet Union. Although the country itself has existed for more than a thousand years. The present constitution of Russia calls for a parliament and a president with divided power.

The Russian part the of Baltic Region

The Russian part of the Baltic region is composed of three rather well distinguished areas:

Karelia, which is an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation.

Northwestern Russia with the city of Saint Petersburg (between 1924 -1991 called Leningrad) and its adjoining administrative districts (oblasts) to the east and south; the Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov oblasts.

The third area is the exclave Kaliningrad oblast (district) with its capital Kaliningrad (up to 1945 Königsberg) on the coast of the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Poland.

These areas will be described on the following pages.
