Morning session (09.00-11.30)
Venue: Main University Building, Auditorium
09.00-9.15 Introduction to Coffee Table Discussions.
9.15-11.30 Coffee table discussions on six themes
Theme 1. Students in the Baltic University Programme. (Venue: room IV). In this table the discussion will focus on students’ role in Baltic University Programme. There are many good examples of students’ activities, such as summer schools, summer courses, conferences, sailings etc. Can we improve students’ voice in the BUP? Can we widen the activities through cooperation with other organizations? The table is chaired by Prof. Vice Rector Ireneusz Zbicinski, and notes are taken by Dr Alena Labodova.
Theme 2. Internationalization of education. (Venue: room IV). Internationalisation of higher education is today one of the most important issues on the agenda of university leaders. BUP produces course materials which are widely used. Is the next step to internationalize education through, for example, Joint Masters Programmes on Sustainable Development? The table is chaired by Prof. Lars Emmelin and Assoc. Prof. Irina Kriba and Dr Kristine Abolina will take notes.
Theme 3. Securing the stability of BUP through contributions (Venue: room IV). The political and economic situation in the Baltic Sea region is changing and BUP network needs to adjust to a new situation. The introduction of membership fees or equivalent contributions was discussed at the Rectors’ Pre-conference. This table will take this issue further, resulting in concrete proposals. The table is chaired by Prof. Lars-Christer Lundin and notes are taken by Assoc. Prof. Victor Ionov.
Theme 4. Greening of universities (Venue: room I). This table will focus on the importance of an attractive education and research environment through greening. Do our universities live as they preach? Is there an economic dimension in a sustainable campus? Is it only about saving energy or is it also about attracting students and researchers? Concrete proposals for future activities are among the expected outcomes of this discussion. The table is chaired by Prof. Berndt Delakowitz and notes are taken by Assoc. Prof. Siarhei Darozhka.
Theme 5. International competence development for the staff – teaching excellence (Venue: room I). This table will discuss the need of staff capacity development, which is a common concern for universities. The discussion will cover areas of importance (thematic, pedagogical etc), and how such trainings could be organized. How can BUP respond to these suggestions? This table is chaired by Prof. Tatyana Polajeva and Assoc. Prof. Alexander Feher takes notes.
Theme 6. Scientific cooperation, research projects and PhD cooperation (Venue: room II). Higher education is by definition based on research, and so is education for sustainable development. The elaboration of new knowledge and innovations is a process which takes time and it is resource demanding. Sustainability research challenges the academia as it connects so many different research areas. How can we through BUP develop the platform for research cooperation? This table is chaired by Prof. Walter Leal and Assoc. Prof. Linas Kliucininkas takes notes.
